Personal branding photoshoot questionnaire

Branding sessions are portraits with a job to do. You need to know who the images are for, where they'll be used and how your client wants to come across, because a confident headshot for a lawyer and for a yoga teacher look nothing alike.

When to send it

Two to three weeks before the shoot, ideally followed by a short call.

Paste them into HoneyBook, Dubsado, Google Forms or an email.

Client questionnaire · Personal branding

The business

  1. What do you do, and who do you do it for?
  2. Three words you want people to feel when they see your photos.
  3. Share two or three brands, websites or feeds whose look you like.
  4. What are your brand colors and fonts, if you have them?

Where the images go

  1. Where will the photos be used: website, about page, LinkedIn, Instagram, podcast cover, speaker bio, press?
  2. Do you need specific formats: vertical for Stories, wide website banners, space for text?
  3. Which shots are on your list: you at work, with clients, products, your workspace, details?

Logistics

  1. Location: your office or studio, a coworking space, outdoors?
  2. Which outfits and props are you bringing, and are you booking hair and makeup?

On camera

  1. How comfortable are you on camera, and in photos of you actually working?
  2. Is there a photo of yourself you love, and one you never want to see again?

How to use the answers

  1. Write the shot list by use

Group it by where each image will live (website header, LinkedIn, Instagram grid) so nothing ships without the crop it needs.

  2. Leave room for text

Shoot some frames with empty space on one side. Your client's web designer will thank you.

  3. Use their work as the prompt

People look most confident doing what they're good at. Ask them to explain their work to you while you shoot.

The question forms get wrong

Most clients don't know how they like to be directed.

So they write “we're awkward” and leave it there. Send the Good Side camera quiz with your questionnaire: two minutes on their phone, and you get their camera type and a session plan with prompts in order.
